Become a Parish Councillor
A parish council is a local authority that makes decisions on behalf of the people in the parish and has an overall responsibility for the well-being of its local community. It is the level of government closest to the community, with the Borough Council above it in the hierarchy. As it is the authority closest to the people, parish councils are invariably the first place people will go with concerns or ideas. For this reason they are a vital part of any community.
Our work falls into three main categories:
- representing the local community
- delivering services to meet local needs
- striving to improve quality of life in the parish
Why become a Parish Councillor?
If you’ve never been to a parish council meeting before, you may be forgiven for thinking that parish councillors are a group of people who meet now and then in a draughty village hall. If, however, you live in a community where something ‘big’ has happened, you’ll know that when people in the community need support and guidance, it is sometimes the parish council that is turned to.
By becoming a parish councillor you become someone your community will look to for help, guidance and support a community leader with the power to influence decisions for the benefit of the people you serve.
Seeing your community change for the better, as a result of decisions you have helped make, is something that can give you a sense of achievement and pride. Our Parish Councillors represent a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Charvil Parish Council is a civic authority, and has no political or religious affiliation.
Volunteer with us

East Park Farm “Gate Gang”
The car park at East Park Farm is managed by the Parish Council, and volunteers help us secure it overnight.
Our “Gate Gang” close the car park each evening (6pm during winter months and 8pm during summer months). During term-time, the car park is opened each day by the Charvil Piggott Primary School, with our volunteers taking over during the school holidays.

Village News Delivery Team
Our Parish Magazine, the Charvil Village News, is produced three times a year and delivered during the school holidays over the summer, Christmas and Easter breaks.
The magazine is delivered free to every home in Charvil, and we are currently looking for additional volunteers to join our delivery team. There’s no set number of magazines that we ask you deliver.

Community Speedwatch
We are in the process of trying to launch a Community Speedwatch Scheme for Charvil.
Small teams of volunteers will monitor speeds across Charvil, recording vehicle details which will be fed back to the Parish Council to influence discussions with the Borough Council and local police.

Community Orchard Volunteers
The Community Orchard is located behind the Village Hall, and will be home to 30 fruit trees.
Throughout the year, the Orchard needs occasional maintenance, including watering during the summer, weeding and pruning.

Defibrillator Team
Charvil has three Public Access Defibrillators, all of which need to be checked on a monthly basis to ensure they are “rescue ready”.

Gardeners Wanted
We’re hoping to set up a group of gardening volunteers to help care for some of the green spaces around Charvil.
Would you like to help us keep the green spaces around your street looking tidy, or help us look after some of the public spaces we manage?
